Aug 1, 1966: Charles Whitman, 25, a student and former Marine, killed his wife and mother before carrying a rifle to the tower on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin. In a 96-minute rampage he fatally shot 14 others before police shot and killed him.
July 12, 1976: Edward Charles Allaway, 37, a custodian at California State University Fullerton killed seven people in the library with a gun purchased at Kmart. He was found not guilty by reason of
Jan. 17, 1989: Patrick Edward Purdy, a 24-year-old drifter, opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle in Stockton, California playground, killing five children and wounding one teacher and 29 other children. He killed himself.
Dec 1, 1997: 14-year-old Michael Carneal fires on students attending a prayer circle at a school in West Paducah, Kentucky. He kills three students and wounds five.
March 24, 1998: Mitchell Johnson, 13, and Andrew Golden, 11, pulled a fire alarm and began shooting as everyone exited a school in Jonesboro, Arkansas, killing four students and one teacher and injuring nine others.
History of Golden Retriever Dogs
History
The Golden Retriever has its roots in Scotland. In the mid-18th century, wildfowl hunting was very popular among the wealthy. In Scotland, a dog was needed that could retrieve from water and land because the land was covered in ponds and rivers. Early retrievers were crossed with the best of water spaniels, giving rise to the dog known as the Golden Retriever.[6] The Golden Retriever was first developed in Scotland at "Guisachan" near Glen Affric, the highland estate of Sir Dudley Marjoribanks laterBaron Tweedmouth. For many years, there was controversy over which breeds were originally crossed. In 1952, the publication of Marjoribanks' breeding records from 1835 to 1890 dispelled the myth concerning the purchase of a whole troupe of Russian sheepdogs from a visiting circus.[7] See Russian tracker.
Improvements in guns during the 1800s resulted in more fowl being downed during hunts at greater distances and over increasingly difficult terrain. This led to more birds being lost in the field. Because of this improvement in firearms, a need for a specialist retriever arose, as training setter and pointer breeds in retrievals were found to be ineffective. Thus, work began on the breeding of the dog to fill this much-needed role.[8]
The original cross was of a yellow-coloured Retriever, 'Nous', with a Tweed Water Spaniel female dog, 'Belle'.[9] The Tweed Water Spaniel is now extinct, but was then common in the border country. Marjoribanks had purchased Nous in 1865 from an unregistered litter of otherwise black wavy-coated retriever pups. In 1868, this cross produced a litter that included four pups; these four became the basis of a breeding program which included the Irish Setter, the sandy-coloured Bloodhound, the St. John's Water Dog of Newfoundland, and two more wavy-coated black Retrievers. The bloodline was also inbred and selected for trueness to Marjoribanks' idea of the ultimate hunting dog. His vision included a more vigorous and powerful dog than previous retrievers, one that would still be gentle and trainable. Russian sheepdogs are not mentioned in these records, nor are any other working dogbreeds. The ancestry of the Golden Retriever is all sporting dogs, in line with Marjoribanks' goals. The Golden Retriever was active and powerful and had a gentle mouth for retrieving games while on hunts.[2]
Golden Retrievers were first accepted for registration by The Kennel Club of England in 1903, as Flat Coats – Golden. They were first exhibited in 1908, and in 1911 were recognized as a breed described as Retriever (Golden and Yellow). It would take another 14 years for the breed to be recognized in America, and in 1925, the American Kennel Club (AKC) did so. In 1938, the Golden Retriever Club of America was founded.
The Honourable Archie Marjoribanks took a Golden Retriever to Canada in 1881, and registered 'Lady' with the AKC in 1894. These are the first records of the breed in these two countries. The breed was first registered in Canada in 1927, and the Golden Retriever Club of Ontario, now the Golden Retriever Club of Canada (GRCC), was formed in 1958. The cofounders of the GRCC were Cliff Drysdale, an Englishman who had brought over an English Golden, and Jutta Baker, daughter-in-law of Louis Baker, who owned Northland Kennels.[10]
Also,organizations other than clubs are dedicated to Golden Retrievers, such as breed-specific adoption sites.
In July 2006, the Golden Retriever Club of Scotland organized a gathering of Golden Retriever enthusiasts at the ancestral home of Guisachan House. A photograph was taken by photographer Lynn Kipps to commemorate the occasion. It captures 188 Golden Retrievers, so holds the record for most Golden Retrievers captured in one image.
Information About Golden Retriever Dogs
The Golden Retriever is a medium-sized breed of dog. They were historically developed as gundogs toretrieve shot waterfowl such as ducks and upland game birds during hunting and shooting parties.[1] They were named retriever because of their ability to retrieve game undamaged. Golden Retrievers have an instinctive love of water. They have a dense inner coat that provides them with adequate warmth, and a water repellent outer coat that lies flat against their bodies. These dogs are well suited to suburban or country environments. Although they need substantial outdoor exercise, they should be kept in a fenced area because of their instincts as hunting dogs and tendency to roam.[2]
The Golden Retrievers' intelligence makes them versatile, allowing them to fill a variety of roles, includingguide dog for the blind, hearing dog for the deaf, hunting dog, illegal-drug detector, and search and rescueparticipant. Because of their loyal and gentle temperament, Golden Retrievers are also popular family pets.

Dozens Killed in Connecticut School Shooting

At least 25 people, including 18 children, were shot and killed at a Connecticut elementary school on Friday, law-enforcement officials with knowledge of the matter said.
A single shooter, identified only as a 20-year-old man by a law-enforcement official, began shooting inside the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., at about 9:40 a.m.
Lt. J. Paul Vance, a spokesman for the Connecticut State Police, confirmed the shooter was dead inside the school building but declined to provide details on casualties, saying the priority was to first inform family members. A law-enforcement official said the suspect had a personal connection to the school, but wouldn't specify what it was.
Lt. Vance said the scene has been secured and that multiple law-enforcement agencies were engaged in "search warrant activity." At a news conference Friday afternoon, he said investigators were looking "both in and out of state" for information on the gunman but assured the public that they aren't at risk.
A law-enforcement official briefed on the matter said the shooter used at least one weapon: a high-powered .223-caliber assault rifle.

Officials at Danbury Hospital said they received three patients from the school but declined to describe their conditions.
"We don't anticipate any more patients at this time," Patrick Broderick, the chairman of the hospital's emergency department, said at a news conference three hours after the incident. He said the hospital was placed on a "lockdown" status out of an "abundance of caution."
The superintendent's office said the district had locked down schools in Newtown, a town of about 28,0000 located about 65 miles northeast of New York City. Schools in neighboring towns also were locked down as a precaution. Sandy Hook Elementary School has 575 students in kindergarten through 4th grade, according to federal data.
An 8-year-old student who was inside the school when the shooting erupted told NBC 4 in New York he was in a hallway and was pulled into a classroom by a teacher.

"Everybody heard the bullets—they, like, went into a full panic," the student said haltingly, as his mother stood beside him.
President Barack Obama was notified of the shooting around 10:30 a.m. by his counterterrorism and homeland security adviser, John Brennan, White House press secretary Jay Carney said.
"The president is receiving regular updates as more information becomes available about this incident," Mr. Carney said.
Mr. Carney said he couldn't confirm any details about the shooting, but the White House will provide more information as officials receive it. He said the Federal Bureau of Investigation is supporting state law enforcement in the investigation.

Mr. Carney called the shooting "a very tragic event" and said the president feels "enormous sympathy" for victims' families.
Mr. Obama spoke on the phone with FBI Director Robert Mueller and Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy to receive an update on the situation and express his condolences, Mr. Carney said. Mr. Malloy was on the scene.
Leigh Libero's daughter, Joey, would have been in a second-grade classroom Friday morning, but she had a dentist appointment.
As Ms. Libero pulled up to the school, she saw just-erected barricades and received an urgent text message from her sister, who works at a television news station in Hartford.
Children were led out the school's driveway, directly to a firehouse, where parents streamed in "en masse" to locate their children, Ms. Libero said. The scene was chaotic as initial reports of a shooting at the school grew steadily worse.
"This is the perfect New England town," Ms. Libero said. "You wouldn't think of this."
Ms. Libero said parents were trying to determine how the gunman entered the school. The school uses a double-secured door during the day, she said. Visitors approaching the school must press a button to be buzzed in through the outer set of school doors to enter the building.
A letter sent to Sandy Hook parents earlier this year described a new security protocol put in place at the school. The protocol requires identification for most visitors who must ring a doorbell to gain entry to the school's front entrance, which is locked after 9:30 a.m. "If our office staff does not recognize you, you will be required to show identification with a picture ID," the letter said.
Brenda Lebinski, whose 8-year-old daughter attends the school, was among the parents who raced to check on their children. "I saw her and it was the happiest moment of my life," she said.
Stephen Delgiadice said his 8-year-old daughter heard two big bangs and teachers told her to get in a corner. His daughter wasn't harmed. "It's alarming, especially in Newtown, Conn., which we always thought was the safest place in America," he said.

At least 27 people, including 18 children, were killed on Friday when at least one shooter opened fire at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, CBS News reported, citing unnamed officials.
If confirmed, it would be one of the worst mass shootings in US history. The holiday season tragedy follows a series of shooting rampages in the United States this year that have killed multiple victims, and it was certain to revive a debate about US gun laws.
The principal and school psychologist were among the dead, CNN said. Witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots with some saying as many as 100 were fired.
The suspected shooter, 24, was armed with four weapons and wearing a bullet-proof vest, WABC reported.
There were unconfirmed reports of a second shooter.
Another person was being held in police custody after he was detained in the woods near the school wearing camouflage pants, CBS reported.
Sandy Hook Elementary School teaches children from kindergarten through fourth grade - roughly ages 5 to 10.
"It was horrendous," said parent Brenda Lebinski, who rushed to the school where her daughter is in the third grade. "Everyone was in hysterics - parents, students. There were kids coming out of the school bloodied. I don't know if they were shot, but they were bloodied."
Television images showed police and ambulances at the scene, and parents rushing toward the school. Parents were seen reuniting with their children and taking them home.
"This is going to be bad," a state official told Reuters, requesting anonymity because the scope of the tragedy remained uncertain.
President Barack Obama was notified and would receive regular updates throughout the day, White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
"We're still waiting for more information about the incident in Connecticut," Carney said when asked about the president's reaction to it.
Carney called the event "tragic" and said there would be time later for a discussion of policy implications.
Obama remains committed to trying to renew a ban on assault weapons, Carney said.
All Newtown schools were placed in lockdown after the shooting, the Newtown Public School District said.
Lebinski said a mother who was at the school during the shooting told her a "masked man" entered the principal's office and may have shot the principal. Lebinski, who is friends with the mother who was at the school, said the principal was "severely injured."
Lebinski's daughter's teacher "immediately locked the door to the classroom and put all the kids in the corner of the room."
Danbury Hospital, about 11 miles west of the school, had received three patients from the scene, a hospital spokeswoman told NBC Connecticut. The mayor of Danbury, Mark Boughton, told MSNBC: "They are very serious injuries."
A girl interviewed by NBC Connecticut described hearing seven loud "booms" as she was in gym class. Other children began crying and teachers moved the students to a nearby office, she said.
"A police officer came in and told us to run outside and so we did," the unidentified girl said on camera.
One child was carried from Sandy Hook Elementary School by a police officer, and the child appeared to have been wounded, the town's weekly newspaper, the Newtown Bee, said on its website.
Connecticut State Police said its officers were at the scene with local police but provided no additional details. The emergency call to police occurred at 9.41am (local time), state police said.
Newtown, with a population about 27,000, is in northern Fairfield County, about 45 miles southwest of Hartford and 80 miles northeast of New York City.
Sandy Hook is one of four elementary schools in the district.
The United States has experienced a number of mass shooting rampages this year, most recently in Oregon, where a gunman opened fire at a shopping mall earlier in the week, killing two people and then himself.
The deadliest attack came in July at a midnight screening of a Batman film in Colorado that killed 12 people and wounded 58.
